What Causes Ripples in Carpets?

This is a question that we at Sams get asked all the time. People notice a few ripples in their carpet and become immediately concerned. Believe it or not, rippling in carpet is actually very common about 4-5 years after being installed. There are a number of different things that can contribute to rippling in carpet and it is usually quite an easy fix. Let’s take a look at a few of the factors that can cause your carpet to ripple.

The 4 Leading Causes of Carpet Ripples

Poor Installation

Although carpet rippling is not usually the installer’s fault, it certainly can be. All installers should follow the CRI (Carpet and Rug Institute) Installation Standards. The CRI sets guidelines for how carpet installation should be done. For example, it states that the carpet should be power stretched as opposed to knee-kicked when installed. When carpets are knee-kicked, they start relaxing after the install and are much more prone to rippling. Make sure your carpet installer follows the CRI Installation Standards to ensure you receive the best possible install.

Latex Carpet Backings

These are made up of latex, which absorbs any moisture that may be in the air, especially when the humidity level is high. This can cause the backings to swell and subsequently cause the carpet to wrinkle. Keeping the room climate controlled definitely helps, but there will always be humidity spikes here in the Midwest. Before the 1980s, carpet backings were made up of jute. Jute is a natural fiber that does not swell so therefore did not usually result in rippling. Backings are now made with latex as opposed to jute because the latex is much cheaper. The material used to make the backing is a key component to carpet ripples.

Type of Carpet

Plush carpets are more likely to ripple than nylon or wool. Loop carpets, like Berber or commercial carpets, are much tighter so they generally don’t swell as much. Triexta carpets are made of recycled plastics, which makes them crush easily after wear and it is hard to revive them after they have been crushed. Nylon is also easy to clean and bring back to life once it has been crushed.

Steam Cleaning

As mentioned before, when carpet backings absorb moisture, the carpet will swell and create ripples. Sometimes after a steam cleaning, the backings will absorb some of the excess moisture and the carpet may ripple a bit. But don’t worry, because once the carpet dries completely, it will relax and return to its normal condition.

The St. Louis Carpet Ripple Experts

Rippling in carpets can happen for seemingly no reason at all. We’ve seen ripples show up on carpet that was perfectly installed. We’ve seen ripples in carpet that was beautifully maintained. We’ve seen ripples occur in carpet that is hardly ever walked on.

If you notice ripples in your carpet, we highly recommend cutting off access to the area. Not only are carpet ripples a trip hazard, but walking on rippled carpet can cause the carpet to wear down much quicker. We also recommend having your carpets power stretched by a professional. This will restore your carpet back to its original beauty in no time. If you have any questions or concerns about your carpet, please feel free to contact us here at Sams and we will be happy to assist you.

Ten Helpful Tips for Increasing Carpet Longevity

The carpet in your home is a serious investment, and replacing it can be a costly endeavor. So it’s important to take every step you can to extend your carpet’s longevity. The good news is, taking care of your carpets isn’t all that difficult if you know what you’re doing. To help you understand the steps you can take to proactively protect your carpet, the Sams team has prepared this list of helpful tips that will keep your carpet fresh and clean.

Tip #1 – Vacuum at Least Once a Week

Vacuuming is the most effective way to minimize normal wear and tear. Vacuum at least once a week. If you have pets or high traffic areas, more frequent vacuuming may be necessary.

Tip #2 – Leave the Shoes at the Door

Make it a family ritual to take your shoes off when coming inside.  When you walk around outside, your shoes pick up soil and residue that will then be transferred onto your carpet.  Not wearing your shoes on the carpet will help your carpet stay clean and extend carpet longevity. Besides, who wants to wear shoes at home?

Tip #3 – Shake Up the Living Room

Move your furniture around on a regular basis. Rotating your furniture so that you’re not always walking on the same area will keep an even amount of traffic across your carpet.

Tip #4 – Clean Air = Clean Carpets

Have you ever had your air ducts professionally cleaned? If there is dirt and debris in your air ducts, it will eventually make its way to your carpet where it will then live until the next vacuuming.

Tip #5 – Mats Make a Difference

Use walk off mats at every entry to your home, especially for doors that open directly to carpeting.. They will help get the loose dirt off your shoes before walking on the carpet.  Have a more aggressive mat by outside doors to better agitate your shoes and rid them of as much dirt as possible.

Tip #6 – Steam Clean on a Regular Basis

We recommend having your carpets steam cleaned at least once a year by a professional. A fresh water rinse will be applied to your carpet after the cleaning to ensure that there is no sticky residue left over.  This will keep your carpet cleaner, longer!

Tip #7 – Use Professional Carpet Cleaning Products

Make sure everything you use on your carpet is made for carpet, especially spot removers. All Sams customers receive a free bottle of our Outta Sight Spotter, which should be used in small amounts to blot stains from the outer edges inward.   If you are using an over-the-counter store bought product, we recommend that you test it out in a small, inconspicuous area first.  Always make sure your carpets are thoroughly rinsed so there is no residue left behind.

Tip #8 – Apply Protectant to Increase Carpet Longevity

Adding a carpet protectant will help extend the life of your carpet. Sealant-based products will seal the fibers of your carpet so they won’t hold in soil.  Your carpet will still get dirty but it will be much easier to clean up.

Tip #9 – Carpet Padding Matters

You probably thought the salesman was padding his own pockets when he sold you on that high quality carpet pad. But a good padding underneath your carpet helps protect it from shock and therefore live longer. Padding is more durable now than it has been in the past so it won’t break down near as easily. Spend the extra. It’s worth it.

Tip #10 – Rugs and Carpet Don’t Mix

We do not recommend putting rugs directly on top of carpet.  This can cause the carpet fibers to crush much quickly because you will be putting constant pressure on the carpet.  Having rugs on top of carpet could also cause discoloration on the carpet underneath.  However, if you want to have a rug on top of carpet for decorative purposes and plan on leaving the rug there indefinitely, then go for it!

Improve Carpet Longevity with the St. Louis Carpet Cleaning Pros

As you can see, there are many things you can do to help extend the life of your carpet. And many of them can be accomplished easily with the help of your friendly neighborhood carpet cleaners, Sams. If you have any questions or concerns about how to care for your carpet, contact us today and we will be happy to help!

St. Louis Carpet Repair Experts Explain the Dangers of Torn Carpet

“OUCH!” That’s the sound of your guest tripping over a tear or unsecured edge in your carpet. You may not realize it, but carpet damages like this act as an environmental hazard that can contribute to falls. When you think of hazards on the ground, you may consider wet floors, exposed wires and dangerous debris that may cause you to slip or trip. However, damaged carpeting can pose a number of threats to visitors if not properly treated. Sams is here to help you rethink these dangers, and provide the fix you need to help ensure a safe environment.

Why Torn Carpets are a Major Hazard?

Torn carpets create an uneven area on the ground. Although guests may not notice the snagged areas, there are chances a foot could get caught in the seams, resulting in a fall and potential injuries. We at Sams Carpet Cleaning & Repairs always stress the importance of carpet preventative maintenance so that further unexpected situations like tripping on the carpet, doesn’t happen and that no one gets hurt. Safety first, everyone!

What Causes Torn Carpet?

It doesn’t take much for carpet to unravel at your residence or place of business. There are a few things that contribute to the tearing process:

Pet Damage

You thinking about locking Fluffy and Fido in the bedroom again? Yes, you want your four-legged friends to settle down when the company arrive, but leaving them locked in a room may lead your pet to digging their way out of there. The clawing at your carpet isn’t the only thing that will cause ripples on your floors. Let’s just say, the other thing is nasty and will lead to the destruction of your floor’s padding. Not only will pet urine stink, the deposit will weaken the carpet and eventually separate it.

Vacuuming

Vacuuming is an essential part of proper maintenance, right? You want to practice vacuuming your carpet in high traffic areas regularly, but when doing so, make sure you pay attention to the material on the floor. Running a vacuum over a softer surface can create snags on your carpet and rip out fibers. Fibers are subject to wear and tear, one of the most common causes of torn carpet, and the vacuum help remove them when it’s not treated properly.

Poor Installation

Poor maintenance and lack of attention contributes to the destruction of your floor. If your carpet wasn’t properly installed, expect subtle changes to appear, such as rips and tears, if objects are dragged over the surface. This will potentially lead to additional holes in different section and cause ripples in the carpet. It’s important for the carpet installer to powerstretch the carpet tight for best performance!

Humidity

Humidity is one of the biggest issues of carpet buckling and causing more damage to your carpet. Missouri is known for our humid weather. Due to the constant change of seasons in Missouri and high humid climate, the moisture in the air penetrates the carpet and causes it to expand. Carpet may lay flat again without needing to do a repair once the moisture levels in the air return back to normal. If not, this will cause further damage to carpet if not repaired right away and will tear.

Delamination

Delamination is caused when the secondary back of the carpet separates from the primary backing that is holding everything together and latex adhesive is breaking down. The carpet is now more movable, can buckle and tear. Much older carpets are more likely to have this happen over time or the carpet is defective. If defective, contact retailor or carpet manufacturer who will likely send an inspector to look at the issue.

What Can You Do to Prevent or Repair a Torn Carpet Situation?

There are a few ways you can remedy your carpet:

Properly installed carpet – Speaking of improper installation, carpet should be placed properly by skilled professionals to ensure that it does not snag, catch or become damaged too soon. Sure, your first inclination may be to fix it yourself or replace it, but that’s what we’re here for! For some people, they’d rather repair the carpet then to have the high cost to replace it.

Regularly inspect your carpet – As a homeowner or business owner, walk throughout the premises to check for potential tears to ensure you get it fixed as soon as possible. At Sams, we will come to your home or business, free of charge, to inspect damaged carpet and determine the best solution to restore your floors.

Carpet Stain Removal Tips from the St. Louis Area’s Carpet Cleaning Pros

“Darn it!” If you’ve ever spilled a glass of red wine or watched one of the kids sends a tumbler full of Kool-Aid cascading onto the carpet, those words have likely crossed your lips. While many things might be running through your mind in that moment, you have to focus on the best way to address the colored spot that now adorns your carpet. There are a number of things you should do, and a couple you definitely shouldn’t. The Sams Carpet Cleaning and Repair team has you covered! We’ve assembled this list of actions to take immediately to help ensure that stain doesn’t stick around.

Tip #1: Act Quickly to Remove Liquid

The first step is to extract as much liquid as possible out of the carpet. To do that, blot the affected area with a white or light-colored cloth. Apply pressure with the heel of your hand to absorb as much of the liquid as you possibly can. Remember, you only want to blot the area. Do not rub! The more it seeps into your carpet, the more time it will have to adhere to the carpet fibers, increasing the likelihood of permanent damage. Also, avoid using colored or printed towels on the spill. The dye from the material may transfer onto your carpet, leaving you with an even bigger mess than you started with.

Tip #2: Be Careful Using Over The Counter Cleaners

Stains and spills are always unexpected and obviously never welcome, so your first instinct might be to reach for a bottle of anything that could take care of the mess. But you might be inviting bigger problems. Before using any over the counter spot removers, which may contain certain ingredients that may cause more problems than they fix, try using warm water in a spray bottle and a white rag. Commercially available cleaning products are typically low quality, and most contain oil, petroleum, silica, or other chemicals. These can leave residue on your carpet, break down fibers, and ultimately, attract more dirt. You might also find different remedies for specific stains online. But be careful what you use on the carpet, because we have seen many customers left with a permanent stain that could have been avoided. If you are using an over-the-counter product, start by applying it in a very small area to see if it works. If not, set it aside and call a professional!

Tip #3: Use Quality Products Formulated for Carpet

If you’re a past customer of Sams, you received a free bottle of our “Outta Sight” spot remover. Outta Sight is trusted by homeowners throughout the St. Louis area, because it is specifically formulated to help you combat colorful spills without damaging your carpet or leaving residue behind. If you do not have a bottle of our Outta Sight spot remover, we recommend avoiding the DIY route completely. Using a product that isn’t made specifically for carpets could cause more damage. And that’s the last thing we want!

Tip #4: Bring in a Carpet Stain Professional

Ultimately, the best preventive action you can take is calling in a professional. We know the impact that different spills can have on carpet, and can create a solution to address the spot without damaging your carpet fibers. Going it alone and using improper chemicals and techniques can have negative long-term effects on your carpet. We want to help you avoid that. The Sams team cares about protecting your investment, and is committed to helping you eradicate unsightly stains.

Next time the red wine or Kool-Aid spills on your carpet, avoid the panic. Know that Sams is on your side! If you’re in the St. Louis region and you have a spot or stain you’re not quite sure how to handle, call the Sams team! We’ll assess the situation and deploy a solution tailored to overcoming your carpet stain.

The Top Four DIY Carpet Cleaning Mistakes People Make

Are you the type of person who finds the idea of rolling up your sleeves and tackling a weekend project around the house appealing? We applaud you! If that means planting some flowers or trying out a new paint technique you learned on Pinterest, making a mistake or two along the way isn’t that big of an issue. But that’s not the case with do-it-yourself carpet cleaning. The truth is, there are a number of carpet cleaning mistakes we routinely see novices make. In this article, we’ll detail four really good reasons to trust your carpet cleaning to the pros.

Over-Shampooing Leaves Residue Behind

That’s right, folks. You can do too much of a good thing. And in this case, we’re talking about the shampoo (soap) applied to your carpet. We’ve found that many DIYers make this rookie mistake. Not only do they apply too much shampoo during the cleaning process, but they also don’t properly rinse out what they do apply. The chemicals left behind can damage your carpet, and will leave a residue that will transform your carpet into a dirt magnet. At Sams, we use the appropriate product for your specific carpet, in the right amount. And we properly rinse the area ensuring the only thing left behind is fresh, clean carpet fibers.

Over-Wetting Invites Mold, Mildew, and Damage

Since we’re on the topic of rinsing, soaking your carpet in water isn’t the solution to getting a clean surface. If too much water is applied, you run the risk of inviting mold and mildew problems into your home. That excess moisture will lie beneath the surface for a long time before it dries out! You also may see your carpet shrink and begin to tear from the edges or seams. Sams uses a proper rinsing technique that will remove residue and ensure the carpet dries promptly – typically after about a half day. To assist with dry time, depending on the outside conditions, air conditioning or heat, we employ a variety of strategies to ensure continuous air flow, which helps shorten the duration of the drying process.

Overuse of Deodorizers Makes Your Carpet Look Worse

In addition to getting your carpet clean, you want it to smell its best for guests. We get it. You don’t want your floor to smell like Fluffy and Fido rolled around on it after a playdate. Deodorizing your carpet may mask smells, but it’s not a long-term solution or substitute for cleaning. The powder will get stuck in your carpet fibers resulting in a messy, dull-looking carpet. Using too much of this powder can create buildup that can’t be removed with your vacuum.

Cleaning Carpet Yourself May Void Your Warranty

Many carpet manufacturers’ warranties require that the carpet is professional cleaned to keep it validated. Be sure to check your specific manufacturer warranties before you go and do it yourself. When in doubt, contact a professional. It could save you a LOT of money in the long haul!

Avoid the Carpet Cleaning Mistakes with One Call to Sams

Three Carpet Cleaning Myths Debunked

“If there’s a stain on your carpet, who you gonna call?” Sams Carpet!

You probably were expecting the next line in our tune to be ghostbusters, but that myth ends here and the solution to professional carpet cleaning begins. There are a lot of theories circulating around carpets and how you should clean them. Sorry to inform you, but a lot of those so called “facts” are indeed carpet cleaning myths. At Sams, our favorite myth is probably “I have my own carpet-cleaning machine, so I don’t need to hire a professional.” While your home machine may work, it won’t have the same suction power professional machines do.

So, who you gonna to call? That’s right. Us! Here is a list of carpet cleaning myths you may have heard, the reasons they’re false, and the truths you can carry going forward.

Carpet Cleaning Myth #1: Wait as long as possible before cleaning new carpet.

This myth suggests that cleaning your carpets will permanently change the appearance of your floor coverings. We’re here to tell you it’s simply not true. If you wait too long to clean your carpet, there will be damage done to the fibers. Many people believe this myth due to prior experiences with carpet cleaners who leave the carpet too wet or full of residue. At Sams, we do a proper analysis of your carpet prior to cleaning it to ensure you receive the best method tailored to your carpet and environment. When we’re done cleaning your carpet, we work to extract and remove all residues and dry your carpet before moving furniture back in.

Carpet Cleaning Myth #2: You can clean your carpet too often.

You can’t bathe too often. You can’t wash your hands too often. And you can’t clean your carpets too often. The more often a carpet is cleaned, the longer it will maintain its original appearance. A lot of people aren’t aware that many carpet manufacturers recommend professional cleaning to maintain your warranty. At Sams, our trained technicians provide proper maintenance, cleaning and care to extend the lifecycle of your carpet and preserve its appearance.

Carpet Cleaning Myth #3: Over-The-Counter Stain Removal Products Are Professional-Grade

Over-the-counter stain removers are formulated to treat many types of carpet stains. As a result, these products are made from many different solutions in order to work efficiently with a wide range of stains. These products do more damage to your carpet, and contribute to discoloration. In contrast, a properly formulated, fiber-specific stain remover, such as Sams “Outta Sight” doesn’t reduce the lifespan of carpet. All of our customers receive a free refillable bottle of “Outta Sight” to help with spot regulation in between visits.

Carpet Cleaning Fact: Sams Delivers Smiles and Clean Carpet

Turning dirty, spotted carpet into something you can be proud of is only part of what we do every day at Sams. We are committed to exceeding the expectations of our customers every time we show up for a scheduled cleaning. We utilize a process, specifically geared towards your carpet, to ensure we get to the root of the problem. Not only will our team examine high traffic areas, but they will groom your carpet to assist in the drying process and reduce the appearance of matting and crushing. We do a final inspection of the work because we care, and want to make sure you are fully satisfied. Some stains are permanent and we offer carpet repair services to address those as well. Our professional and skilled technicians will evaluate and determine the best method to approach removing the stain.

“We can’t hear you. Who you gonna call?” If you’re over those myths, and want to treat your home to some professional carpet cleaning it so deserves, give Sams a call!

Employee Spotlight: Phil and Nik Carrino

You don’t often hear about siblings working together, and we have a feeling if you know of any, it might not be the friendliest of relationships or very long lasting. That’s not the case with our favorite brothers at Sams Carpet Cleaning and Repairs, Phil and Nik Carrino. These brothers have worked together for over 11 years at Sams and they still like each other!

To celebrate family, we decided for this month’s employee spotlight to highlight Phil and Nik and learn what it’s like for siblings to work together for so many years.

Q: How did you guys end up at Sams, how long have you been here and what are your job title/roles?

Nik: I’ve been here for 14 years, I saw a Sams Van in my apartment buildings parking lot all the time and knew that they did good work. I reached out to them to see if they were hiring and lucky for me, they were! I am the Water Restoration Manager and I often work with the Insurance Companies to help families quickly get their homes back into shape. If you ever have water damage or flooding, I’m your guy!

Phil: I’ve worked here for 11 years. I saw how happy my brother was working here so when I found out they were hiring, I jumped on it. I started out as a Technician, but I am now the Training Manager and Technician Specialist.

Q: Why Sams? What is about Sams that makes us different and special?

Nik: It really does feel like a family, and I’m not just saying that because I work with my brother every day. We look out for each other, we have the support of the other employees and we care for our customers as though they were family. For customers, I believe they really feel that difference and know they can trust us. Customer satisfaction is huge, we go above and beyond to make sure each customer is happy and taken care of to the best of our capabilities.

Phil: It’s not a big, faceless organization. Jeff and Susan get to know all of the employees on a personal level, which I think is pretty unusual. They even attended my wedding last year, and it was wonderful to have them there to celebrate with us!

Q: What do you enjoy most about working at Sams?

Phil: Definitely the people. It’s a fun work environment, relaxed and culture is huge. I also love the Sams commitment to the community and organizations that are important to employees.

Nik: I agree 100%, Jeff and Susan sponsor me at Bike MS each year and I’m extremely grateful for their support. We have fun coming to work every day and it feels laid back and comfortable, we can be ourselves and know that we have the support of everyone we work with. We enjoy coming to work, which is something we know not everyone outside of Sams can say about their jobs.

Q: Any favorite or memorable client stories?

Nik: There’s too many over the years. I love getting to know our customers, some of them have been using Sams for years and have known my brother and I since we started. We’ve even had several ladies make us cakes and snacks when we come out to their house because they’re happy to see us and that we came out to help.

Phil: It’s always my favorite when I see a homeowner’s reaction when they see their freshly cleaned carpet that they thought was beyond repair. Knowing that we helped them and possibly saved them the headache and giant bill of getting new carpet is amazing.

Q: So, the ultimate question. What’s it like working together as brothers?

Nik: Well, it’s certainly had its ups and downs. We used to live together AND work together, and we got tired of each other pretty quick. Once we moved out and lived separately, it was awesome! We get to hang out and catch up every day in small doses, which is the perfect amount.

Phil: I have to look at his face everyday… that can be good or bad, depending on how you look at it. But really, it’s pretty cool to work with your brother and know you have his support.

So there you have it, a closer look at our favorite brothers. Thank you to Phil and Nik for taking the time to talk to us and give us an inside look their lives at Sams Carpet Cleaning and Repairs. Stay tuned for our next employee spotlight!

How to Choose a Carpet Repair or Cleaning Company

While you’re staring at the ripped seams and the stains that won’t remove themselves, you should be contemplating the carpet cleaning or repair company that will be best to contact. If you don’t take anything else from Sams, remember this remedy – utilizing a good, professional carpet repair service company is the care and commitment your carpet needs. There are a few reputable recommendations that you should look for when determining what carpet service to use. At Sams, we give you assurance that you’ll be fully satisfied with a job well done. We are committed to technical excellence and friendly professionalism. Very often, it’s difficult for a homeowner to determine if a professional has the ability to do a proper job. For this reason, Sams recommends only hiring trained technicians to ensure satisfactory service. To further assist in the selection process, Sams has put together a list to aid you through your home’s restoration period.

Choose a Company That Fights Health Hazards

Don’t just pick up the phone when your kids decide to drop their popsicles on the floor, but schedule routine visits with your cleaning service to prevent airborne pollutants from becoming a problem. Good carpet cleaning doesn’t just do away with stains, but good cleaning rids your carpet of contaminants to help with your breathing and overall home health. Sams understands that sometimes it’s the things you can’t see that causes problems in your home. More dirt than you can imagine builds up and interferes with your air circulation. Look for a company that employs experienced technicians that cater to the importance of designation and how to attain it.

Consider the Carpet Cleaning Process

As a homeowner, you have several options when choosing the type of carpet cleaning method you feel is suitable for your space. Some cleaning companies utilize particular cleaning patterns, such as steam cleaning treatments, that call for a drying time. Other companies may use a dry treatment that allows you to walk on the carpet when the process is done. At Sams, we apply the latest technology to make sure that your carpet is pre-treated for stains or smells. We perform a water rinse to remove residue to ensure that your carpet stays cleaner longer. Before our team leaves, we will groom the carpet pile to assist in the drying process. Choose a company that accommodates your family during the process.

Hire Certified, Trained and Skilled Technicians to Treat Your Home

Your home is a significant investment and you want to hire a company with a qualified trained team to make sure your warranties and life of your flooring is good for many years to come. But you also want convenience that you can count on, and that’s exactly what you’ll receive when you call Sams. We only ask for one thing when you contact us: allow us to take the responsibility and stress off your shoulders. The company you use should supply you with a skilled team to get the job done and get it done right! At Sams, we are committed to excellence and professionalism with every visit that is scheduled. Not only are we equipped with the best equipment and techniques, but we are covered. We are Insured and Bonded, and a Certificate of Insurance is available upon request. Call around and get quotes from several companies, and inquire about whether they’re insured or not.

Now that your search is over, we encourage you to give us a call. Sams can ensure you ease when using our services. We don’t just care about your carpet, we care about our people and your home. We take invitations to our customers’ homes or businesses seriously, because we understand home is where the heart is.
