Ten Helpful Tips for Increasing Carpet Longevity

The carpet in your home is a serious investment, and replacing it can be a costly endeavor. So it’s important to take every step you can to extend your carpet’s longevity. The good news is, taking care of your carpets isn’t all that difficult if you know what you’re doing. To help you understand the steps you can take to proactively protect your carpet, the Sams team has prepared this list of helpful tips that will keep your carpet fresh and clean.

Tip #1 – Vacuum at Least Once a Week

Vacuuming is the most effective way to minimize normal wear and tear. Vacuum at least once a week. If you have pets or high traffic areas, more frequent vacuuming may be necessary.

Tip #2 – Leave the Shoes at the Door

Make it a family ritual to take your shoes off when coming inside.  When you walk around outside, your shoes pick up soil and residue that will then be transferred onto your carpet.  Not wearing your shoes on the carpet will help your carpet stay clean and extend carpet longevity. Besides, who wants to wear shoes at home?

Tip #3 – Shake Up the Living Room

Move your furniture around on a regular basis. Rotating your furniture so that you’re not always walking on the same area will keep an even amount of traffic across your carpet.

Tip #4 – Clean Air = Clean Carpets

Have you ever had your air ducts professionally cleaned? If there is dirt and debris in your air ducts, it will eventually make its way to your carpet where it will then live until the next vacuuming.

Tip #5 – Mats Make a Difference

Use walk off mats at every entry to your home, especially for doors that open directly to carpeting.. They will help get the loose dirt off your shoes before walking on the carpet.  Have a more aggressive mat by outside doors to better agitate your shoes and rid them of as much dirt as possible.

Tip #6 – Steam Clean on a Regular Basis

We recommend having your carpets steam cleaned at least once a year by a professional. A fresh water rinse will be applied to your carpet after the cleaning to ensure that there is no sticky residue left over.  This will keep your carpet cleaner, longer!

Tip #7 – Use Professional Carpet Cleaning Products

Make sure everything you use on your carpet is made for carpet, especially spot removers. All Sams customers receive a free bottle of our Outta Sight Spotter, which should be used in small amounts to blot stains from the outer edges inward.   If you are using an over-the-counter store bought product, we recommend that you test it out in a small, inconspicuous area first.  Always make sure your carpets are thoroughly rinsed so there is no residue left behind.

Tip #8 – Apply Protectant to Increase Carpet Longevity

Adding a carpet protectant will help extend the life of your carpet. Sealant-based products will seal the fibers of your carpet so they won’t hold in soil.  Your carpet will still get dirty but it will be much easier to clean up.

Tip #9 – Carpet Padding Matters

You probably thought the salesman was padding his own pockets when he sold you on that high quality carpet pad. But a good padding underneath your carpet helps protect it from shock and therefore live longer. Padding is more durable now than it has been in the past so it won’t break down near as easily. Spend the extra. It’s worth it.

Tip #10 – Rugs and Carpet Don’t Mix

We do not recommend putting rugs directly on top of carpet.  This can cause the carpet fibers to crush much quickly because you will be putting constant pressure on the carpet.  Having rugs on top of carpet could also cause discoloration on the carpet underneath.  However, if you want to have a rug on top of carpet for decorative purposes and plan on leaving the rug there indefinitely, then go for it!

Improve Carpet Longevity with the St. Louis Carpet Cleaning Pros

As you can see, there are many things you can do to help extend the life of your carpet. And many of them can be accomplished easily with the help of your friendly neighborhood carpet cleaners, Sams. Environmentally Friendly Carpet Cleaning Services

These days, we’re told we have to eat better, sleep better, exercise better. So we choke down kale, get our eight hours of rest, and hop on the elliptical until we’re sweating like the pilot in Airplane! We’re told to do this so that we can be healthier.

So why do so many of us not feel healthier? Believe it or not, the answer might be right under your feet. When is the last time you had your carpet professionally cleaned? Go ahead and think about it. We’ll wait.

Now that you have an approximate guess, let us hit you with some knowledge. In order to keep your carpet in tiptop shape and free of allergens of all sorts, it’s suggested that you have your high-traffic carpet areas cleaned every 12-18 months and the rest of your carpet cleaned every two years. Of course, it all depends on factors like if you have pets or children, and how many people live in the house.

If we’re like most people, we’re guessing it’s been more than two years since you’ve had your carpet cleaned. If that’s the case, think about what is in your carpet: dirt, dust, and all sorts of things to make your path to health and wellness seem like the road to nowhere. And don’t get us started on your upholstery.

We get it; you take care of your house, and you vacuum your carpets regularly. But vacuuming is not enough. It takes a thorough cleaning to bring back not only the vibrancy of the carpet, but also the air quality you might be lacking.

Your Environmentally Friendly Carpet Cleaning Partners

At Sams Carpet Service, we use an environmentally friendly cleaning system. Using the latest removal technology available, we pre-treat your carpet for stains and smells. We then use our powerful extraction cleaning system, which allows us to thoroughly clean all sides of the carpet fiber. A fresh-water rinse is also applied to remove any residue. This helps to keep your carpet cleaner for longer.

By the time we leave your home, your carpets will not only be cleaner, but they’ll be free of many pollutants you didn’t even know were there.

And we can do the same for your upholstery, too!

You want to live a healthier life, and we’re here to help with your goal. No, we’re not going to bench press a single weight for you. We can’t make you not binge watch Netflix at 1:00 a.m. And we can’t say we adore kale. But we can help with making your home a healthier environment.

Tile and Grout Cleaning Tips from the St. Louis Area Experts

The floors in your house take a lot of abuse. Think about how often you and your family, friends and guests walk around, tracking dirt, germs and who knows what else! You might notice that your tile and grout are getting grungy, dirty and just not looking their best. But what can you do to bring the tile and grout back to their previous clean glory, or is it a lost cause? We are here to tell you that your tile and grout can be looking new and refreshed!

Can You Clean Tile and Grout Yourself?

With the right tools and sometimes a lot of elbow grease, you can definitely get the tile and grout in your home looking brighter and cleaner.

You can make a paste of baking soda and vinegar to “paint” on the grout lines, then spray the paste with a solution of equal amounts water and vinegar. Once the solution stops bubbling, scrub the grout with a nylon bristled scrub brush, or an old toothbrush (be sure to mark the cleaning toothbrush to ensure it doesn’t end up in someone’s mouth!) After scrubbing away all the buildup, mop the floor with plain water to remove the baking soda and vinegar residue.

Those instructions were pretty easy to write, but they’re a lot harder to follow. Cleaning your tile and grout yourself is a lot of work, and still may not produce the best result. So, is there a better way?

Sams is the St. Louis Area Tile and Grout Specialists

We get it. You have a lot to get done in a day. Getting down and deep cleaning the tile and grout in your home is not a quick and easy process. You might be thinking, “Who has time for that?”

Well, that’s where the Sams team comes in!

Here’s the 8-step process our technicians follow to help St. Louis area homeowners restore their tile and grout to its original beauty:

  1. Inspect the surface for any damage
  2. Carefully move furniture and prepare the work area
  3. We will sweep and vacuum the surface to remove loose dirt, dust or soil
  4. Apply a pre-conditioner to break down any oil and residue
  5. The floors are scrubbed with abrasive brushes to remove stains and traffic patterns (no one wants to see that, right?)
  6. Pressure cleaning is done with a rotary hot water extractor leaving the area clean and fresh
  7. Excess water residue is removed and the drying process begins
  8. Once dried, furniture is returned to their original positions!
  9. If you’d like, a sealant can be applied throughout to help prevent future staining of your grout and make cleaning easier! If sealant is applied, the drying process will take a little longer.

And that’s it! Having your tile and grout professionally cleaned will make the entire room look fresh and new again. We’re not recommending that you eat off the ground, but, after our deep cleaning of your tile and grout, you most certainly could. Nobody here will judge you for it. Contact us to learn more or to set up an appointment.

Your Local St. Charles County Solution for Odor Removal

“What’s that smell?” This is usually a visitor’s first thought when they’re greeted with an unpleasant odor at any home. Lingering smells that live in your home will soon affect the love you once had for it. Sadly, spraying air freshener won’t solve that stinky issue of yours. In fact, you’ll find that even after showering your place with the finest Febreze on the market, the smell has remained. But never fear – you don’t have to move out of your musty home to escape the stench! Help is closer than you think, right here in St. Charles, MO. Let the Sams team help. Here are a few tips that will help you banish bad odor and kick them to the curb!

Clean Your Air Ducts to Prevent Odors from Spreading

Central heating and air conditioning systems are everyone’s best friend during those hot summers and cold winters. But they can also be a prime place for odors to build up. As the air passes through your hallways, you begin questioning the unpleasant scents you’re smelling. Before you tackle the problem, identify what’s causing your air ducts to smell. If you’re a do-it-yourselfer, you can try cleaning your condenser coils and collection pan utilizing a strong cleaning solution, preferably one with bleach, to kill off mold. Using your vacuum, suck up loose dust or debris from the fins and coils. If the smell wasn’t coming from the air conditioning unit, then it can be coming from any part of the duct system, and you’ll need professional help for that.

Clean Your Home to Address Odors at the Source

You’re going to pick up those dirty socks, right? Honestly, this is something you should already be doing, but if you’re just letting your teenager’s cleats lay around it’s time to make a change. Clean your home thoroughly with cleaning solutions and antibacterial rags regularly. Be sure to pay attention to places you normally wouldn’t clean, such as cabinets, window sills, vents, and under the sink. Take it one step further and wipe down the walls, baseboards, doors and countertops.

Eliminate Pet Odors

You think Fluffy and Fido only leave odors behind when they have an accident? Think again. Just like us, dogs sweat when they’re hot, and the body parts that produce the greatest smells are bigger on dogs. Their paw pads spread on your carpets, floors, sofa and any other thing they can stand on. It may be best to keep Fluffy and Fido on a routine bathing and grooming schedule to reduce the aroma that’s sticking around. Speaking of sticking, let’s talk about those accidents on your carpet. A lot of accidents, specifically urine, can leave permanent stains – affecting the dyes on your floor. With a proper inspection, Sams will identify the best course of action to clean the stains and remove odor. Click here to read about the impact of urine deposits on your carpet.

Clean Your Carpet and Upholstered Furniture

“Knock, knock. Who’s there?” It’s the stench you’ve been stressing over. Pull out those odors in your carpet with a vacuum cleaner. A vacuum can help to keep your home smelling fresh by getting rid of dirt and other particles lodged in your carpet. To help with your vacuuming process, you can try an “at-home” remedy for odors and use baking soda. Try sprinkling it on your fabrics surface, letting it settle overnight, and vacuuming the carpet for the best results. Although this is an odor neutralizer, this will only get you so far. Instead of taking your chances, call a professional.

Call Your St. Charles Odor Removal Professionals

At Sams, we’re experts in eliminating offensive odors, and our trained technicians help identify areas holding the harsh smells. By highlighting the cause and location of the odor, we’re able to determine an appropriate course of action to remedy the situation. The science of identifying these areas can be tricky, but our cutting-edge equipment helps restore your home. We’re passionate about helping our customers maximize the enjoyment of their space. Between our infrared lighting technology to identify the cause of many odors to our thermo fog process and dehumidifiers, we’ll be sure to hunt down the problem, neutralize odors and kill pollutants.

So, what are you waiting for? Give us a call today and free your family of those stinky fumes. We love our community, and we would love the opportunity to be welcomed into your home. Let us properly remove the odor, and leave the restoration process to us.

Employee Spotlight: Chris Scoles

Chris Scoles is our Operations Manager/Account Executive here at Sams Carpet Cleaning and Repairs, and to say that he is a busy guy is an understatement. Just tracking him down for this conversation meant he had to sit still for a couple minutes! We’re excited to introduce you to Chris, an integral cog in the Sams machine. Now, without any further ado, join us for our get-to-know-you conversation with Chris!

Q: How long have you been at Sams and how did you get your start at Sams?

A: I used to drive by the Sams building everyday on my way to work and had a friend who worked there as a technician. I told him if they were ever hiring to let me know because I was looking for a change. In July of 2001 he gave me a call that they were hiring and the rest is history!

Q: 16 years later, what exactly do you do at Sams?

A: I started as a field technician, I spent several months training and cleaning customer’s carpets, flooring and air ducts. Over time, I moved up, started learning other parts of the job and became a team leader. Fast forward a couple more years and I am now the Operations Manager!

Q: What exactly does an Operations Manager position entail?

A: I’m in charge of the team, I get them ready to go each day and prep them on the jobs assigned. I take care of the everyday tasks, training new employees, maintenance on the machines and vehicles. I’m also the Account Executive for several of our larger apartments and I’m constantly out in the field giving estimates. I’m constantly moving around and if you’re looking for me, it changes from day to day where you’ll find me!

Q: Why did you choose Sams?

A: Sams treats their employees very well. There is a mutual respect between the bosses and the employees and we have built a great core of technicians. If anyone has a question, you know you can turn to another employee who has been there for many years who would have the answer. Our customer service is awesome and we really care for our customers. I also love the freedom I have here, I get to travel around the city and I’m constantly busy, which I love.

Q: What’s the Sams difference?

A: I would have to say our training program. We would never send a new employee out in the field until they are fully trained and ready, it might be 6-8months before they’re in a house cleaning. We train our technicians about the SCIENCE behind carpet cleaning and repair and we ensure every technician masters the skills before sending them out. We also use high quality machines and equipment that are only available at Sams.

Q: Do you have any memorable experiences at Sams, maybe celebrity run ins or encounters?

A: I have cleaned several Rams players houses including Adam Timmerman, Orlando Pace and of course like Dennis mentioned, we cleaned Nelly’s house in Lake St. Louis on several occasions. We also regularly clean Nelly’s producer’s house, which it’s nice to see big talent in St. Louis!

Q: When you’re not at work, where can we find you?

A: That’s easy, on the golf course. I’m an avid golfer and if I can find the time, you will certainly find me at one of the golf courses in town.

Q: What is your proudest accomplishment over your many years at Sams?

A: That’s hard for me to say, I don’t want to sound like I’m tooting my own horn. Mainly I think it’s overseeing the training of our technicians and ensuring that they are on top of their game. I know our technicians have the skills and training that far exceeds others. Our technicians are talented, supportive and have years of experience that is beyond valuable. I’m proud of these guys and know they’re out in the field doing the best work possible.

So there you have it, now you know our beloved Operations Manager, Chris! A big thank you to Chris for taking a few minutes out of his always hectic day for this conversation! Be sure to check back next month for our NEXT Employee Spotlight!

Selling your home? Top deep cleaning projects (for your new house too!)

So you’re selling your house! As the savvy home seller you are, you know having a clean house is one of the most important aspects of selling it. Regular cleaning and tidying can go a long way, but deep-cleaning your house can make a huge difference in the impression potential homebuyers have of your house.  Regardless of how good the bones of your house are, or if you’ve updated the hardware on all your cabinets, if your home is dirty, that will be the impression most potential homeowners will walk away with.

Odor

Making your house light and airy is the goal for many people trying to sell their homes, but all the natural light in the world is not going to get rid of a funky smell. Some homeowners may not even realize their house smells because they have become so accustomed to living with it. If you’re in any doubt, invite over your most honest friend and see if you need to take care of the smell. Air fresheners only temporarily cover up smells, and some home buyers may be allergic to them or not like the scents you chose.

Check out Sams Carpet’s specialized services just to help with eliminating odors, whether it’s to help sell your old home, or make your new one more enjoyable.

Carpet

Dirty carpet in particular can turn away potential buyer, and some websites will go so far as to say you should completely replace your carpet before showing your home. Thanks to Sams Carpet, you won’t have to do anything that drastic, even if you have tough stains or holes! We have expertise in stain removal, or even patching or spot dying carpet for particularly tough areas.  Worried about ripples? We take care of that too!

Tile

Tile is great because it is difficult to get dirty, but likewise it can be difficult to get clean. Stains or dirty grout can turn away prospective homebuyers because it can seem like an overwhelming project, and some people assume you have to redo or cover up dirty grout. But we can tell you, grout can be cleaned and look amazing again. We know—we’ve done it.

Upholstery Furniture

Even though the person buying your home won’t be buying your furniture with it, it’s part of what they see when viewing your home. Stained or dirty furniture can leave potential homebuyers with a poor view of your house overall. We understand all upholstery is different, and know the best way to make yours clean and beautiful again.  Do yourself a favor and have it cleaned so your house looks great for showing, and you have clean furniture for your new home! It’s a win-win all around.

Air Ducts

An often over-looked aspect of cleaning, your air ducts may be restricting the airflow of your house, and even affecting your health. While most homebuyers’ first thought will not be “Oh, better check out the air ducts,” stale or dusty air still affects the atmosphere of your house and how your homebuyer will view it. Opening the windows is the most frequently cited suggestion, but if you are selling your house in one of the nine months of the year that it isn’t a nice 72 degrees outside, that may not be practical, and it doesn’t take care of the buildup of dust or the dust mites that are in your ducts.

Even if you don’t choose to have the ducts changed in the house you are selling, it’s a good idea to have the air ducts cleaned in the house you are buying. After all, nothing’s better than sitting back in your new home and taking a deep breath of fresh, clean air.

Pets

Anyone who has a furry friend in their home knows how pet fur has a way of getting…everywhere. They also know how difficult it can be to get out of carpets or couches.  While diligent vacuuming can keep the fur somewhat under control, it doesn’t always take care of the fur that has embedded deep in your carpets, or the smell your pet can leave behind. Any accidents they have can even go below the carpet into the padding, or even the subfloor. Save yourself the hassle and let Sams take care of it for a truly deep clean. Your future homebuyers will thank you.

Or maybe your new home used to have pets. Start clean with Sams Carpet, and help your new house feel like home.

Sams Carpet Cleaning Thinks Pink in October

For us at Sams Carpet, Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a big deal. In the past, we have participated in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure to support Jeff’s sister Tammy and other breast cancer survivors with the “Tammy O” Team.

One in eight women in the United States alone will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. To break that down, an estimated 246,660 women in the US will be diagnosed with breast cancer each year, and more than 40,000 will die. Even more, breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among women. These are some extremely scary numbers that no one wants to see. What do we want? We want a cure. We don’t want to ever hear a loved one say, “I have cancer”.

Thankfully, death rates from breast cancer have been declining since 1990 thanks to better screening and early detection, increased awareness and improving treatment options thanks to funds raised by people like you.

For the month of October, our wonderful team have been wearing pink Breast Cancer shirts as a reminder to be tested and to help raise money to fight for a cure. We have to say, they look pretty great, right?

To learn more about Breast Cancer Awareness, how to help or about screening, you can visit www.nationalbreastcancer.org. In honor and in memory of those who have battled Breast Cancer, we think of you this month and your incredible strength.

Spills and Stains, Oh My! How To Treat Your Carpet and Upholstery When Life Happens

Spills happen. We are all human, as much as we would like to pretend we are perfect, we are bound to laugh a little too hard and spill a glass of wine. A child is bound to turn around too quickly and knock over their milk. An overly excited dog might run into the room and track muddy paw prints. Life is busy and hectic, and we’re bound to need a little touch up here or there. C’est la vie.  And that’s where we come in to help.

If you have a little stain or spot in the carpet, here are our tips to treating it yourself at home. Of course, do not hesitate to give us a call if you have any questions or feel like the stain just might be out of your control. Here are our do’s and don’ts for treating stains and spots in your carpet or upholstered furniture.

  • Don’t Wait
Immediately pick up any solid spills and soak up any liquid with a clean white towel. NOTE: It’s important to ALWAYS use a clean white towel to insure that no dye from the towel stains the carpet. Remember, we are trying to treat a stain, not cause another.
  • Don’t Scrub
Gently blot carpet to avoid pushing the stain deeper into the fibers. When blotting, blot from the outside of the stain going inward, as blotting outward can spread the stain to a larger area. This is what we are looking to avoid!
  • Don’t Over Saturate
You don’t want to add to much water to the area, this could saturate the carpet backing, causing further damage. This also goes with any cleaner, be sure to use a small amount and never saturate. We recommend keeping water or cleaner in a spray bottle for a fine miss and to avoid over saturating the carpet or upholstery.
  • Be Careful With Any Cleaning Product, Use a Test Area
There is too much uncertainty with cleaners and how they might react to your carpet or upholstered furniture, you don’t want to take that risk! Be careful with any product by reading the label and using only small amounts first in a test area to make sure it’s not setting your stain and can be removed. Reach out to a carpeting professional for their cleaning agent recommendation or to purchase a professional cleaner. All Sams’ customers receive a bottle of our “Outta Sight” spot remover after a cleaning, which is perfect for those pop up, “uh oh” moments! Trust your gut and use water first to soak up the stain, and from there, use the Outta Sight cleaner to treat the area. Be sure to use any cleaner lightly, you want to use a gentle hand and touch, too much could harm rather than help.
  • Don’t Let The Area Air Dry
You might think it’s best to just set it and forget it, but in this case, letting the area air dry can cause rings and dimples. Take a dry cloth and place it over the wet area. Then add a non-staining, heavy object over the cloth and let it dry overnight. The weight will help keep the carpet flat and from rippling, saving you a headache down the line.
  • Hand brush or vacuum area post stain removal
This is an important step to plump up the carpet and help to revive the area. With a little fluffing, the carpet should be rejuvenated and thanking you for a job well done.

Of course, give us a call if you have any questions or would like us to give that stain a closer look. We would be happy to help!
