What Causes Ripples in Carpets?

This is a question that we at Sams get asked all the time. People notice a few ripples in their carpet and become immediately concerned. Believe it or not, rippling in carpet is actually very common about 4-5 years after being installed. There are a number of different things that can contribute to rippling in carpet and it is usually quite an easy fix. Let’s take a look at a few of the factors that can cause your carpet to ripple.

The 4 Leading Causes of Carpet Ripples

Poor Installation

Although carpet rippling is not usually the installer’s fault, it certainly can be. All installers should follow the CRI (Carpet and Rug Institute) Installation Standards. The CRI sets guidelines for how carpet installation should be done. For example, it states that the carpet should be power stretched as opposed to knee-kicked when installed. When carpets are knee-kicked, they start relaxing after the install and are much more prone to rippling. Make sure your carpet installer follows the CRI Installation Standards to ensure you receive the best possible install.

Latex Carpet Backings

These are made up of latex, which absorbs any moisture that may be in the air, especially when the humidity level is high. This can cause the backings to swell and subsequently cause the carpet to wrinkle. Keeping the room climate controlled definitely helps, but there will always be humidity spikes here in the Midwest. Before the 1980s, carpet backings were made up of jute. Jute is a natural fiber that does not swell so therefore did not usually result in rippling. Backings are now made with latex as opposed to jute because the latex is much cheaper. The material used to make the backing is a key component to carpet ripples.

Type of Carpet

Plush carpets are more likely to ripple than nylon or wool. Loop carpets, like Berber or commercial carpets, are much tighter so they generally don’t swell as much. Triexta carpets are made of recycled plastics, which makes them crush easily after wear and it is hard to revive them after they have been crushed. Nylon is also easy to clean and bring back to life once it has been crushed.

Steam Cleaning

As mentioned before, when carpet backings absorb moisture, the carpet will swell and create ripples. Sometimes after a steam cleaning, the backings will absorb some of the excess moisture and the carpet may ripple a bit. But don’t worry, because once the carpet dries completely, it will relax and return to its normal condition.

The St. Louis Carpet Ripple Experts

Rippling in carpets can happen for seemingly no reason at all. We’ve seen ripples show up on carpet that was perfectly installed. We’ve seen ripples in carpet that was beautifully maintained. We’ve seen ripples occur in carpet that is hardly ever walked on.

If you notice ripples in your carpet, we highly recommend cutting off access to the area. Not only are carpet ripples a trip hazard, but walking on rippled carpet can cause the carpet to wear down much quicker. We also recommend having your carpets power stretched by a professional. This will restore your carpet back to its original beauty in no time. If you have any questions or concerns about your carpet, please feel free to contact us here at Sams and we will be happy to assist you.

Ten Helpful Tips for Increasing Carpet Longevity

The carpet in your home is a serious investment, and replacing it can be a costly endeavor. So it’s important to take every step you can to extend your carpet’s longevity. The good news is, taking care of your carpets isn’t all that difficult if you know what you’re doing. To help you understand the steps you can take to proactively protect your carpet, the Sams team has prepared this list of helpful tips that will keep your carpet fresh and clean.

Tip #1 – Vacuum at Least Once a Week

Vacuuming is the most effective way to minimize normal wear and tear. Vacuum at least once a week. If you have pets or high traffic areas, more frequent vacuuming may be necessary.

Tip #2 – Leave the Shoes at the Door

Make it a family ritual to take your shoes off when coming inside.  When you walk around outside, your shoes pick up soil and residue that will then be transferred onto your carpet.  Not wearing your shoes on the carpet will help your carpet stay clean and extend carpet longevity. Besides, who wants to wear shoes at home?

Tip #3 – Shake Up the Living Room

Move your furniture around on a regular basis. Rotating your furniture so that you’re not always walking on the same area will keep an even amount of traffic across your carpet.

Tip #4 – Clean Air = Clean Carpets

Have you ever had your air ducts professionally cleaned? If there is dirt and debris in your air ducts, it will eventually make its way to your carpet where it will then live until the next vacuuming.

Tip #5 – Mats Make a Difference

Use walk off mats at every entry to your home, especially for doors that open directly to carpeting.. They will help get the loose dirt off your shoes before walking on the carpet.  Have a more aggressive mat by outside doors to better agitate your shoes and rid them of as much dirt as possible.

Tip #6 – Steam Clean on a Regular Basis

We recommend having your carpets steam cleaned at least once a year by a professional. A fresh water rinse will be applied to your carpet after the cleaning to ensure that there is no sticky residue left over.  This will keep your carpet cleaner, longer!

Tip #7 – Use Professional Carpet Cleaning Products

Make sure everything you use on your carpet is made for carpet, especially spot removers. All Sams customers receive a free bottle of our Outta Sight Spotter, which should be used in small amounts to blot stains from the outer edges inward.   If you are using an over-the-counter store bought product, we recommend that you test it out in a small, inconspicuous area first.  Always make sure your carpets are thoroughly rinsed so there is no residue left behind.

Tip #8 – Apply Protectant to Increase Carpet Longevity

Adding a carpet protectant will help extend the life of your carpet. Sealant-based products will seal the fibers of your carpet so they won’t hold in soil.  Your carpet will still get dirty but it will be much easier to clean up.

Tip #9 – Carpet Padding Matters

You probably thought the salesman was padding his own pockets when he sold you on that high quality carpet pad. But a good padding underneath your carpet helps protect it from shock and therefore live longer. Padding is more durable now than it has been in the past so it won’t break down near as easily. Spend the extra. It’s worth it.

Tip #10 – Rugs and Carpet Don’t Mix

We do not recommend putting rugs directly on top of carpet.  This can cause the carpet fibers to crush much quickly because you will be putting constant pressure on the carpet.  Having rugs on top of carpet could also cause discoloration on the carpet underneath.  However, if you want to have a rug on top of carpet for decorative purposes and plan on leaving the rug there indefinitely, then go for it!

Improve Carpet Longevity with the St. Louis Carpet Cleaning Pros

As you can see, there are many things you can do to help extend the life of your carpet. And many of them can be accomplished easily with the help of your friendly neighborhood carpet cleaners, Sams. If you have any questions or concerns about how to care for your carpet, contact us today and we will be happy to help!

Environmentally Friendly Carpet Cleaning Services

These days, we’re told we have to eat better, sleep better, exercise better. So we choke down kale, get our eight hours of rest, and hop on the elliptical until we’re sweating like the pilot in Airplane! We’re told to do this so that we can be healthier.

So why do so many of us not feel healthier? Believe it or not, the answer might be right under your feet. When is the last time you had your carpet professionally cleaned? Go ahead and think about it. We’ll wait.

Now that you have an approximate guess, let us hit you with some knowledge. In order to keep your carpet in tiptop shape and free of allergens of all sorts, it’s suggested that you have your high-traffic carpet areas cleaned every 12-18 months and the rest of your carpet cleaned every two years. Of course, it all depends on factors like if you have pets or children, and how many people live in the house.

If we’re like most people, we’re guessing it’s been more than two years since you’ve had your carpet cleaned. If that’s the case, think about what is in your carpet: dirt, dust, and all sorts of things to make your path to health and wellness seem like the road to nowhere. And don’t get us started on your upholstery.

We get it; you take care of your house, and you vacuum your carpets regularly. But vacuuming is not enough. It takes a thorough cleaning to bring back not only the vibrancy of the carpet, but also the air quality you might be lacking.

Your Environmentally Friendly Carpet Cleaning Partners

At Sams Carpet Service, we use an environmentally friendly cleaning system. Using the latest removal technology available, we pre-treat your carpet for stains and smells. We then use our powerful extraction cleaning system, which allows us to thoroughly clean all sides of the carpet fiber. A fresh-water rinse is also applied to remove any residue. This helps to keep your carpet cleaner for longer.

By the time we leave your home, your carpets will not only be cleaner, but they’ll be free of many pollutants you didn’t even know were there.

And we can do the same for your upholstery, too!

You want to live a healthier life, and we’re here to help with your goal. No, we’re not going to bench press a single weight for you. We can’t make you not binge watch Netflix at 1:00 a.m. And we can’t say we adore kale. But we can help with making your home a healthier environment.

Tile and Grout Cleaning Tips from the St. Louis Area Experts

The floors in your house take a lot of abuse. Think about how often you and your family, friends and guests walk around, tracking dirt, germs and who knows what else! You might notice that your tile and grout are getting grungy, dirty and just not looking their best. But what can you do to bring the tile and grout back to their previous clean glory, or is it a lost cause? We are here to tell you that your tile and grout can be looking new and refreshed!

Can You Clean Tile and Grout Yourself?

With the right tools and sometimes a lot of elbow grease, you can definitely get the tile and grout in your home looking brighter and cleaner.

You can make a paste of baking soda and vinegar to “paint” on the grout lines, then spray the paste with a solution of equal amounts water and vinegar. Once the solution stops bubbling, scrub the grout with a nylon bristled scrub brush, or an old toothbrush (be sure to mark the cleaning toothbrush to ensure it doesn’t end up in someone’s mouth!) After scrubbing away all the buildup, mop the floor with plain water to remove the baking soda and vinegar residue.

Those instructions were pretty easy to write, but they’re a lot harder to follow. Cleaning your tile and grout yourself is a lot of work, and still may not produce the best result. So, is there a better way?

Sams is the St. Louis Area Tile and Grout Specialists

We get it. You have a lot to get done in a day. Getting down and deep cleaning the tile and grout in your home is not a quick and easy process. You might be thinking, “Who has time for that?”

Well, that’s where the Sams team comes in!

Here’s the 8-step process our technicians follow to help St. Louis area homeowners restore their tile and grout to its original beauty:

  1. Inspect the surface for any damage
  2. Carefully move furniture and prepare the work area
  3. We will sweep and vacuum the surface to remove loose dirt, dust or soil
  4. Apply a pre-conditioner to break down any oil and residue
  5. The floors are scrubbed with abrasive brushes to remove stains and traffic patterns (no one wants to see that, right?)
  6. Pressure cleaning is done with a rotary hot water extractor leaving the area clean and fresh
  7. Excess water residue is removed and the drying process begins
  8. Once dried, furniture is returned to their original positions!
  9. If you’d like, a sealant can be applied throughout to help prevent future staining of your grout and make cleaning easier! If sealant is applied, the drying process will take a little longer.

And that’s it! Having your tile and grout professionally cleaned will make the entire room look fresh and new again. We’re not recommending that you eat off the ground, but, after our deep cleaning of your tile and grout, you most certainly could. Nobody here will judge you for it. Contact us to learn more or to set up an appointment.

Remove Pet Urine Smell: The Impact of Pet Urine

Ew! Did Fluffy and Fido leave their mark on your carpet again? We love our furry friends, but we don’t like the stains that they leave behind on our carpets. Once the smell sinks into the carpet, the chances of your pet going back to the same spot are very high. Pet urine can be diverse, depending on the makeup of the urine. Depending on your pet’s health, diet, and reproductive cycle, the variations are the deciding factors on whether you’ll be able to remove stains or not. At Sams, we know that pet damage is more than what you see on the surface. With a proper inspection, the Sams team will identify the best course of action to clean the stains and remove the pet urine smell.

Although all accidents will leave permanent stains, urine has the power to affect the dyes used in carpet. Dyes may change colors immediately after contact with urine, while others may take weeks or months before experiencing a reaction. Stains can soon become permanent spots after it develops slowly and time starts to pass. After the deposit, many times, the moisture can weaken the bond between the layers of the carpet, separating the layers and seams.

Another problem to consider, is cat urine. All urine is bad, but cat pee isn’t just disgusting. It’s also dangerous. Urine from your cat can harm your health, and the waste that these pets carry could cause illness. Not only will the urine smell have an effect on your mood, but if you have a respiratory condition the strong odor can irritate and harm your lungs. It’s important that you’re not exposed to the frequency of the pet urine smell in your household.

How We Remove Pet Urine Smell

In order to locate all urine-saturated spots, you have to be mindful and understand that all stains aren’t on the surface but some may have seeped underneath the carpet. We’ve seen it all. Sometimes, accidents can seeping their way down to the padding and passing to the subfloor. When it comes to cleaning, focusing on the surface doesn’t solve the problem. Whether the damage is minimal or not, Sams will evaluate the many possibilities of how the carpet is damaged.

If it’s a minor impact, our trained technicians will perform regular cleaning duties and use enzymes to remove the pet urine smell, which will do the trick for minor causes. For repeat offenders, we will conduct a thorough inspection to assess the severity of damage done. We will use a special light on questionable areas. The Sams team might even pull the carpet and pad back to identify what damage has been done. We offer a variety of services that remove pet urine smell and other odors from your home. Whether it’s pets or cigarette smoke, Sams doesn’t mask the odors. We look to eliminate them.

When you hire the Sams team, you’re hiring trained technicians who care. These technicians will make sure you have the information needed to make educated decisions on when an appropriate job is done right. We’re committed to excellence, professionalism and respect that raises the bar of carpet repair, carpet cleaning and much more.

Your Local St. Charles County Solution for Odor Removal

“What’s that smell?” This is usually a visitor’s first thought when they’re greeted with an unpleasant odor at any home. Lingering smells that live in your home will soon affect the love you once had for it. Sadly, spraying air freshener won’t solve that stinky issue of yours. In fact, you’ll find that even after showering your place with the finest Febreze on the market, the smell has remained. But never fear – you don’t have to move out of your musty home to escape the stench! Help is closer than you think, right here in St. Charles, MO. Let the Sams team help. Here are a few tips that will help you banish bad odor and kick them to the curb!

Clean Your Air Ducts to Prevent Odors from Spreading

Central heating and air conditioning systems are everyone’s best friend during those hot summers and cold winters. But they can also be a prime place for odors to build up. As the air passes through your hallways, you begin questioning the unpleasant scents you’re smelling. Before you tackle the problem, identify what’s causing your air ducts to smell. If you’re a do-it-yourselfer, you can try cleaning your condenser coils and collection pan utilizing a strong cleaning solution, preferably one with bleach, to kill off mold. Using your vacuum, suck up loose dust or debris from the fins and coils. If the smell wasn’t coming from the air conditioning unit, then it can be coming from any part of the duct system, and you’ll need professional help for that.

Clean Your Home to Address Odors at the Source

You’re going to pick up those dirty socks, right? Honestly, this is something you should already be doing, but if you’re just letting your teenager’s cleats lay around it’s time to make a change. Clean your home thoroughly with cleaning solutions and antibacterial rags regularly. Be sure to pay attention to places you normally wouldn’t clean, such as cabinets, window sills, vents, and under the sink. Take it one step further and wipe down the walls, baseboards, doors and countertops.

Eliminate Pet Odors

You think Fluffy and Fido only leave odors behind when they have an accident? Think again. Just like us, dogs sweat when they’re hot, and the body parts that produce the greatest smells are bigger on dogs. Their paw pads spread on your carpets, floors, sofa and any other thing they can stand on. It may be best to keep Fluffy and Fido on a routine bathing and grooming schedule to reduce the aroma that’s sticking around. Speaking of sticking, let’s talk about those accidents on your carpet. A lot of accidents, specifically urine, can leave permanent stains – affecting the dyes on your floor. With a proper inspection, Sams will identify the best course of action to clean the stains and remove odor. Click here to read about the impact of urine deposits on your carpet.

Clean Your Carpet and Upholstered Furniture

“Knock, knock. Who’s there?” It’s the stench you’ve been stressing over. Pull out those odors in your carpet with a vacuum cleaner. A vacuum can help to keep your home smelling fresh by getting rid of dirt and other particles lodged in your carpet. To help with your vacuuming process, you can try an “at-home” remedy for odors and use baking soda. Try sprinkling it on your fabrics surface, letting it settle overnight, and vacuuming the carpet for the best results. Although this is an odor neutralizer, this will only get you so far. Instead of taking your chances, call a professional.

Call Your St. Charles Odor Removal Professionals

At Sams, we’re experts in eliminating offensive odors, and our trained technicians help identify areas holding the harsh smells. By highlighting the cause and location of the odor, we’re able to determine an appropriate course of action to remedy the situation. The science of identifying these areas can be tricky, but our cutting-edge equipment helps restore your home. We’re passionate about helping our customers maximize the enjoyment of their space. Between our infrared lighting technology to identify the cause of many odors to our thermo fog process and dehumidifiers, we’ll be sure to hunt down the problem, neutralize odors and kill pollutants.

So, what are you waiting for? Give us a call today and free your family of those stinky fumes. We love our community, and we would love the opportunity to be welcomed into your home. Let us properly remove the odor, and leave the restoration process to us.

Frozen Pipes: What to Do and How to Prevent

The thought of pipes freezing may seem a bit melodramatic, but it isn’t far-fetched. In fact, it happens more often than you probably realize. Water that freezes during the winter in an unprotected pipe expands, and that expansion can rupture. And we all know how our St. Louis weather can be unpredictable, so it’s smart to be prepared. We’ll cover prevention later. But if you’re reading this article, you’ve likely already discovered a frozen pipe and are looking for a solution.

What to Do if Your Pipes are Frozen

STEP 1: Apply Heat

Adding heat to a frozen pipe helps speeds up the process of melting the ice. Try wrapping a heating pad around it, blowing an electric hair dryer on it, or plugging in a space heater nearby to achieve the quickest results.

STEP 2: Open Your Faucets

To thaw a pipe, you can start near your faucet. In order to do this, you want to make sure your faucet is still on. Identify the frozen water supply pipe, and from there, you will be able to locate the blocked area. As you begin to treat the pipe, the water will help melt ice in the pipe as it passes by.

STEP 3: Turn Up the Heat

Turn up the thermostat in your home to impact pipes hiding behind the walls. Many people like to lower their thermostat when they’re out of town, but be sure to keep your house at around 60 degrees or higher to ensure the pipes don’t freeze.

As the pipe begins to thaw and water begins to flow from the faucet, allow the faucet to stay open for a few minutes. Make sure that all the ice is clear from the pipe. Once everything is all clear, cut off the faucet and check the line for leaks. From there, you will be able to decide if you need to replace or repair the pipe.

How to Prevent Frozen Pipes

Taking preventative measures before the wicked winter weather hits, allows you to reduce and eliminate all cold-weather threats. Some pipes are more prone to freeze over others. Pipes that are against exterior walls have little or no insulation and are subject to freezing. As your thermometer starts descending, make sure you pay close attention to the condition of your pipes. Being prepared may help you avoid the messy and costly expenses that frozen pipes can bring. To that end Sams has a few suggestions on how to prevent water pipes from freezing and how to thaw them if they do.

Draining – Taking instructions from manufacturers or installers, drain all water from the swimming pool and water sprinkler supply lines. Do the same for hoses and store them indoors. Make sure to keep the outside valve open so that any water remaining in the pipe can expand without causing the pipe to break.

Inspection – Check around your home for other areas where water supply lines may be located, particularly in unheated areas. Pipe insulation can happen in the basement, attic, garage, kitchen and unexpected spaces. You want to check for hot and cold pipes. Low temperatures can affect all pipes in your home.

Installation – Heat tape and heat cable can go a long way toward preventing exposed pipes from freezing. These materials can be applied directly to pipes and provide significant protection from cold weather. They can be used to keep your pipes warm in areas that don’t have frequent or prolonged temperatures below freezing.

Prevention– During cold snaps (below 32 degrees) allow a faucet to drip slowly, moving water will keep the pipe from becoming blocked with ice and freezing. Also leave cabinets doors under sinks open to allow the warmer temperatures in your home to reach those pipes and keep them at a reasonable temperature.

When disconnecting your water/garden hose, make sure to cover all the outside faucets. If you plan on being away for a while, shut off your water supply that connects to you washer. Lastly, close all windows, to prevent combined wind drafts and freezing temperatures from freezing your pipes faster.

What to Do if a Pipe has Burst

The best solution for frozen pipe burst clean-up is to hire experienced and trained water damage restoration technicians. Water damage that seeps into the floors and drywall causes moisture that will rot the wood on walls and floors. At Sams, our water extraction and anti-microbial application techniques is incredibly effective at minimizing future mold and mildew problems.

If you’re ready for a proper inspection and assessment, contact us today. If you experience a water disaster, don’t fear. We can help.

The Forgotten Adoption Option: Every Child Deserves a Family

There are 120,000 kids in the United States waiting to join their forever family. In Missouri alone, there are 1,500 adoptable children in the foster care system.

As a longtime supporter of this community where we live and work, Sams Carpet Cleaning and Repairs is partnering with Marcy Bursac, a St. Charles-based author, podcast host and adoptive mom of two birth siblings. Marcy is working to build awareness for and give a voice to children in foster care. We fully support her mission to demystify foster care adoption, an affordable way to give these children a more promising future.

From an early age, Marcy knew she wanted to grow her family through adoption someday. She shared this desire with her husband before they married. Her husband, whose grandfather was orphaned and separated from his birth siblings at an early age, had often wondered what his grandpa could have accomplished with his natural artistic ability if he’d had a family to nurture it and support him. He knew the impact they could have on the lives of children through adoption and was compelled to provide it.

Telling Her Story, Finding Her Voice

When their children moved in with them, Marcy and her husband were told they would be fostering them for 4 months while waiting to schedule a court date. In reality it took 18 months- twice as long as it takes to deliver a biological child. Throughout the adoption process, Marcy blogged about their experience. She noticed early on that she was attracting readers in growing numbers, but nobody was reaching out. She felt like people were peeking in on their experience to learn, but not raising their hands to ask questions they likely had.

While many of us had transformative moments through the COVID-19 pandemic, Marcy’s transformation led to her finding her calling. Early on in the pandemic, she was overwhelmed with stories about pet shelters left empty as families were adopting dogs and cats at record rates. Marcy is a big supporter of pet adoption. Her own family includes three rescue dogs. But it was difficult to see these stories and not think about the thousands of children in foster care not getting the same opportunities.

Helping Others Understand the Process

There are many preconceived notions people have about adoption. One is that it’s expensive. It’s true that domestic or international infant adoption can cost $30,000 or more. But the total cost of adoption through foster care typically adds up to less than $2,500. Another is that the process of adoption is long, messy, and filled with potential heartbreak. While the process of finding a child can take up to five years with international adoption and seven years with domestic infant adoption, adopting through foster care typically takes 6 to 18 months.

But the messy part? That’s a reality. Why is it so painstakingly difficult to provide a loving home for a child who needs one? Why are there so many hoops to jump through? And while foster care adoption is much quicker than infant adoption options, why does it still take twice as long as it takes to give birth? It’s a reality that Marcy’s working to change.

Marcy felt it was on her heart to write a book- something that could thoroughly lay out the process of adoption through foster care. It wouldn’t make the steps any simpler or fewer, but she recognized the value in knowing fully what to expect. And she hoped that laying it all out could help spark a conversation about reforming foster care adoption in Missouri and beyond.

Written in just 25 days, her book The Forgotten Adoption Option was launched last November- National Adoption Month. The book is written like a candid conversation between her and the reader. It’s as a complete how-to guide for pursuing foster care adoption. Marcy has since gone on to launch The Forgotten Adoption Option Podcast, where she interviews adoptive parents, and children who have been adopted, about their unique stories of foster care adoption.

Taking the Cause to a Bigger Stage

Earlier this summer, Marcy was crowned Mrs. St. Charles with the platform of expanding her foster care adoption advocacy work.  an event she participated in to raise awareness for her platform of foster care adoption. She will go on to compete in the Mrs. Missouri America competition in September. If crowned there, she will compete at the Mrs. America competition in Las Vegas, and have the opportunity to shine a national spotlight on the need for families to answer the call of foster care adoption.

From the very beginning, Susan Sams and the Sams Carpet Cleaning and Repairs team has been a big supporter of Marcy and her efforts to grow awareness for foster care adoption. Along the way, we’ve worked to encourage her, help grow her audience, and make important connections to tell her story. We continue to be proud supporters of her as she seeks to reach new and bigger audiences as Mrs. St. Charles.

We are inspired by the advice Marcy gives to families who are beginning the foster care adoption process:

“You’re going to meet challenges along the way. Always stay focused on what’s waiting at the end: a child eager for the opportunity to be a part of your family.”

If you’re interested in learning more about foster care adoption, The Forgotten Adoption Option website is a great place to start. There you can purchase her book, find inspiring stories in her podcast, and learn more about how you can help give a voice to and be an advocate for adoptable children in foster care and hoping for the promise of a better future.

Employee Spotlight: Dejuan Evil

The exciting day is here, the one that we’ve been waiting for all month long… our latest employee spotlight! We love taking take the time to talk with one of our wonderful employees each month, learn more about them and their thoughts on working for Sams Carpet Cleaning and Repairs. This month, we sat down with Dejuan, one of our Account Executives, and you can’t help but love the guy. So without any further ado, lets meet Dejuan!

Q: How long have you been at Sams and how did you get your start?

A: I’ve been here for 3 years, and you can actually blame Chris Scoles for me being here! I’ve been friends with Chris for 24 years and he’s actually the one who told me Sams was hiring! I had been to a few Sams events and gatherings prior and knew a few of the employees, so I knew it was somewhere I would like to work. Chris had always spoken highly about the company and culture, so it felt like a natural fit. To say I’m happy that Chris told me about the job would be an understatement.

Q: What exactly do you do as an Account Executive?

A: I wear several hats, I go out and give estimates on projects, from residential to commercial, and I also work with a lot of the apartments and commercial clients. My job is a bit of a mix between marketing, new business and sales. It’s nice to not be trapped behind a desk, I’m able to get out of the office, meet people and see projects firsthand.

One of my favorite parts of the job is that I have the opportunity to meet people and network. As a people person, I love getting out there and seeing the people I get to talk to on the phone.

Q: What is it about the Sams experience that is different or enticing?

A: I would have to say it’s our quality of work and the skills and years of experience of our technicians. Many of our technicians have been here for over a decade, they understand what it takes and have pride in the quality of their work. Our repairs are outstanding and our customers are happy, which is exactly what we want! We also have wonderful customer service, they go above and beyond for our customers.

The culture at Sams for employees is awesome. We all get along and have fun, it’s something I haven’t seen at other places I’ve worked. We’re all friends and are there for each other, you have to love the atmosphere.

Q: Do you have any memorable experiences from over the years at Sams?

A: It’s hard to pinpoint just one… my favorite thing is seeing the looks on a customer’s face when they’re happy and surprised that their carpet looks new. Part of my job is following up with clients, so hearing their joy and excitement is the best. On a none work related note, my favorite memory would have to be Susan’s surprise 50th birthday party! I was the DJ and Bartender for the big event and it was hilarious and so great to see Susan cut loose and have fun with her family and friends.

Q: What do you do for fun outside of work?

A: Well, I have 2 daughters, one is a freshman in high school and the other is in 5th grade. I coach their basketball and soccer teams, which I absolutely love, and I also play basketball myself. Now that my girls are getting older, I am in this new, unchartered territory of BOYS. My oldest daughter was on the homecoming court this year, and that was new, exciting, and terrifying.

We hope you enjoyed our conversation with Dejuan! He is an outgoing, funny and caring guy who we are incredibly lucky to have as part of the Sams family. Check back next month to see who will be our NEXT employee spotlight!
